- Begin by melting the shortening in a small saucepan over low heat.  Remove from heat and let cool. 
- Add sugar, molasses, and egg to a bowl and mix well. 
- In a medium bowl, combine the flour, soda, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, and salt.  Slowly add to the molasses mixture.  Mix well. 
- Chill for about 20 minutes. 
- Form in to 1" balls, roll in sugar and place on cookie sheets lined with parchment paper or lightly greased. 
- Bake at 350 degrees for 8-9 minutes.
